Wilbert “Wil” Irvine, age 95, passed away on May 10, 2019 in Hendersonville NC. Born in Peterborough Ontario, Canada on September 28, 1923, Wil moved to Kenmore NY as a child. He lived in and around Kenmore for much of his life. Wil served honorably in the US Army in WWII. He worked for Wurlitzer as a graphic artist for most of his career, then spent a few years in the art department of American Greetings after he moved to Avon Park, Ohio. Wil retired and continued his work as an artist; he was a prolific painter – well known for his “Barnscapes”, detailed works of rustic barns across the US. He also penned several books including compilations of fiction featuring stories about his Barnscapes paintings, Bible studies and devotionals. An active member in the Art League of Henderson County, and well respected in the art community, Wil participated with delight as a judge for the annual Hendersonville “Chalk it Up” sidewalk chalk art exhibit for nearly two decades. Wil was active with his church families, first at French Broad Baptist Church (many may recall his masterful VBS sets) and most recently at Calvary Baptist Church in men’s groups, Bible studies, and serving eagerly at every opportunity. His cheerful demeanor and “splendid” outlook will be missed by so many who knew him.
Wil is survived by his wife Palma “Pam” Avanzato Irvine, his daughters Leslie Irvine of Longmont CO and Diana Sulewski of Boca Raton FL, his granddaughters Mandi Fletcher of McMinnville TN and Colleen Sloan of Delray Beach FL, his great-granddaughters Ayslin Fletcher and Leila Sloan. Preceded in death by his parents Gladys Mulligan Irvine and John Wilbert Irvine, and his brothers Walter Irvine, John Irvine and Richard Irvine.
A Memorial Celebration of Life will be held at Calvary Baptist Church 2501 Haywood Road, Hendersonville NC, on Sunday May 26, 2019, at 4:00 pm visitation with the family at 3:00 pm. Officiated by Pastor Ken Mason.
